Celtic Songs for Kids for St Patrick’s Day

February 17, 2020 By Sara Mullett 14 Comments

Celtic songs are a wonderful way to get kids up and moving to music . They are great for encouraging improvised Irish dancing, Ceilidh-ing or simply marching and skipping.

The following songs are a few of the favourites that I have accumulated over the years which are guaranteed to get your kids wanting to jig. Although dancing to Celtic songs is fun all year round it is particularly appropriate for St Patrick’s Day! So here are some Celtic Songs that are an absolute must have for any St Patrick’s Day party playlist.

Where possible i’ve added in links to Amazon downloads for each of the tracks – but i’ve also got YouTube videos too so they can be played straight from the post.

St Patrick’s Day Party Playlist:  perfect Celtic Songs to get kids moving

Let's Play Music: Celtic Songs for Kids Perfect for St Patricks Day!

1. The Irish Washerwoman.

2. Garryowen.

3. Royal Irish Regiment’s selection of quick marches. Band, Bugles & Pipes and Drums of The Royal Irish Regiment

4. Val Doonican: Paddy McGinty’s Goat.

5. Art Mooney: I’m Looking Over a 4 Leaf Clover.

6. Michael Finnegan
Proper Irish dancing takes lots of lessons and years of practice, but the music just makes you jig and it’s impossible not to have a go!  See these little ones go for it in the YouTube clip below 🙂

The video below shows a beginners Ceilidh dance, which still looks pretty complex to me!  But gives an idea of the sort of moves that you can do. Most children would prefer just improvising with jigging and hopping in time to the music, but you can also try forming two lines facing each other or skipping in circles.

What are your kid’s favourite Celtic songs to sing and dance to on St Patrick’s Day? Add any more suggestions that you might have in the comments section below! If you’re looking for more songs to sing for St Patrick’s Day check out these Leprechaun Songs!

Love the great compilation of songs and dance from Ireland. We included it in our post on exploring and learning Irish music for St. Patrick’s day: http://raisingcreativechildren.net/exploring-and-learning-irish-music-for-st-patricks-day/ We think it is so important to connect music and dance for a lot of folk music, so it’s great to see both represented here. Thank you for sharing!
