When summer finally arrives, it brings a truly magical effect to the garden. It transforms into a glorious display of growth and colour. This is true whether you have a small patch with a few pots or a large plot with shrubs and vegetables.
To small children it can seem like a jungle out there and a whole new extraordinary world to explore. Bringing wonderful possibilities for all sorts of summery nature crafts and sensory play.
Children have fantastic imaginations and there is no harm in encouraging them with a few fanciful tales about fairies and elves. There’s plenty of time to be sensible and realistic later on. In fact I think as an adult, you get much more fun out of life never being completely certain about these things!
This lovely little Summer Fairy song is a wonderful way to explore the summer season in a creative and imaginative way.
The Summer Fairy Song
Fairy, fairy, in the garden,
Will you come tonight?
Dancing in the cool moonlight,
All silver sparkling white!
*
Fairy, fairy, in the garden,
Will you come tonight?
Dancing in a little ring,
What magic will you bring?
*
Fairy, fairy, in the garden,
Did you come last night?
I can tell that you were here,
My little fairy dear!
(sung to the tune of Mary, Mary Quite Contrary)
At the bottom of our garden we had an old tree stump, and I suggested that our children should leave a little gift for the fairies on it. We made some fairy bread, cut it into tiny little triangles and topped with sugar sprinkles. And we laid it out on a bottle top tray and juice in tin foil goblets.
Then we’d sing the summer fairy song. Of course the children were delighted to find in the morning, that not only had it disappeared (thanks to a mouse or a bird!) but a sparkly marble had been left in exchange ( from me of course! ) But more than enough to firmly convince them!
And so, a lengthy correspondence of letters and gifts carried on right through till Autumn! When the next time came for the tooth fairy to make a visit, my kids felt that they were welcoming an old friend!
If your kids are fond of dressing up, then fairy wings and wands are essential for this sort of imaginative play. A lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon is to watch a wonderfully heartwarming film called Fairytale It’s based on a true story and embraces the whole spirit of fanciful imagination.
After the film would be a perfect opportunity to put on some fairy wings for some fairy dancing to these specially chosen tracks for budding fairies!

Love the song. My favorite books and movies are fantasy types. Always nice to dream away our cares.

We love this song in our Junior Kindergarten class! We had a red and white polka-dotted mushroom just waiting to be danced around, and your song is the perfect one. We also love the tune being played on the xylophone because it sounds so gently and fairylike. Thank you for the song!!! Room 23 JK in Ottawa, Canada

What a wonderful way to encourage your kids creativity. I wish we had a special fairy place in our garden too – perhaps we should build one 🙂
