The Three Little Kittens Who Lost Their Mittens

January 14, 2020 By Sara Mullett 5 Comments

The Three Little Kittens Who Lost Their Mittens is one of the old traditional nursery songs which I’m particularly fond of.

I find it works best when sung with our free printable kitten stick-puppets (scroll down to print). These always help the children to get involved with both the song and the story and they are so pleased that there is a happy ending!

The Three Little Kittens Kids Music Activities

The Three Little Kittens

There were three little kittens,

Put on their mittens,

To eat some cherry pie!

Miaow, miaow, miaow, miaow,

 Miaow, miaow, miaow!

*

Those three little kittens,

They lost their mittens,

And all began to cry!

 Miaow, miaow, miaow, miaow,

 Miaow, miaow, miaow!

*

Go, go naughty kittens,

And find your mittens,

Or you shan’t have any pie!

 Miaow, miaow, miaow, miaow,

 Miaow, miaow, miaow!

*

Those three little kittens,

They found their mittens!

And happily did cry!

 Miaow, miaow, miaow, miaow,

 Miaow, miaow, miaow!

*

“Oh Mummy dear!

Our mittens are here!

Quick, quick, cut up the pie!

Purr, purr, purr, purr, purr, purr, purr!”

You can also do a bit of role play with this song, it’s such fun when the kids pretend to be the kittens themselves using real mittens which they  hide behind their backs when they are lost, and then produce them as if by magic when the kittens find them again.

Even very young babies can play this game with a little help, because they love hiding and finding things and never fail to be surprised when the mittens magically reappear! Using real mittens also gives the opportunity for a matching pairs game which little ones are always keen to play!

If you want to sing the song with the printable stick puppets click here to print, or click on the image below. Once you have mounted them on card and attached the sticks you’ll notice that they are double sided – one side without mittens and the other side with them. You can have a lot of fun with this, as small children are easily baffled by this trickery!

In the absence of a proper puppet theatre you can use a high backed chair, making the puppets peep up from behind it. Make sure that the children don’t discover the double sided secret at first, as they love the surprise. Later on you can show them how it works and then they will be keen to play the game too!
