Five Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day : Counting Songs

February 15, 2021 By Sara Mullett 13 Comments

Five Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day is always a favourite, it’s great for practicing numbers and introducing the concept of subtraction, as each little duck swims away.

If you have some little toy ducks it makes a lovely counting game which can enjoyed over and over. It’s always great fun to sing when you go swimming and makes bath time musical and educational too!

Although it is definitely a great one to sing un-accompanied, here is a great sing-a-long track from Let’s Play Jazz that you can listen to over and over for free! If you want to download this track, you can do so from our bandcamp page.

Scroll down to the bottom of the page for free printable puppets, sheet music for piano as well as how to play Five Little Ducks Went Swimming On Day on the chime bars.

Five Little Ducks Went Swimming One Day Lyrics

Five little ducks went swimming one day,

Over the hills and far away,

And Mummy Duck said “Quack, quack, quack”

But only four little ducks came back.

*

Four little ducks went swimming one day,

Over the hills and far away,

And Mummy Duck said “Quack, quack, quack”

But only three little ducks came back.

*

(continue repeating the verse, counting down until there are no little ducks)

*

Then Daddy Duck came swimming one day,

Over the hills and far away,

And Daddy Duck said “QUACK, QUACK, QUACK!”

And all the little ducks came swimming straight back!

*

In the absence of toy ducks, you could make them together out of card or felt and attach them to sticks. Perfect for a little counting puppet show!

Here are the  free printable puppets we used – although they could be very easily adapted depending on what you have to hand!
