I Went to Visit a Farm One Day is perhaps the easiest song to sing about farms with preschoolers. This song doesn’t require any actions or dancing, just a full and enthusiastic repertoire of farmyard noises!
Alternatively this song also goes down very well with puppets. You can try homemade sock puppets or paper finger puppets. Generally children aren’t fussy about having lavish props and are always happy to make up for it by using their imaginations.
I Went to Visit a Farm One Day Lyrics
I went to visit a farm one day,
We saw a pig across the way,
And what do you think I heard it say?
Oink, Oink, Oink!
*
I went to visit a farm one day,
We saw a sheep across the way,
And what do you think I heard it say?
Baa, Baa, Baa!
(Change the animal and it’s sound for each verse)
Setting up a farm scene
Most kids have a collection of toy animals that might come with a farm house and a tractor or two and I Went to Visit a Farm One Day is a great song to sing as you set up a farm scene. Once it’s all set up you can add each animal and demonstrate the different sounds as you go.
Alternatively, you might like to follow up your farm themed activities by going off to visit the real thing if you have somewhere suitable nearby!
I Went To Visit A Farm One Day Tune and Printables
If you don’t know the tune of this nursery rhyme the chime bar clip below demonstrates it quite well.
It’s simple and catchy – and is a great tune for adapting to other words too!
On The Farm music theory printable
The printable below is always a hit with preschool age kids. First they can colour in the farmer and the title and then they can complete the simple theory exercise.
Print of the free On the Farm theory sheet here.
This worksheet just introduces music note values by asking the children to copy the notes into the box and clap the rhythm. For more about music note values, check out my posts here.
Free Piano Sheet Music
If you play the piano or have some chime bars or resonator bells then you can always keep the activity simple by playing on a piano or a keyboard and inviting the children to sing along. You can find the free piano sheet music here, or by clicking the thumbnail below.

Educational Benefits of these activities

- Developing memory – for both the words and the tune
- Learning all of the farm animals and their noises!

Hi. I would like to print this sheet (I went to visit a farm), but there is no link attached to the picture like the others I have managed to print. Thanks for making these available.
Hi Marianne, I’ve just updated that post and the link is now working – hopefully you should be able to print it now.
I love this song for storytime, do you happen to know where I can find ukulele chords? I’ve checked on different sites and couldn’t find anything. I was even surpised there were no guitar accompaniment.
Thanks for your comment Kascia ๐ I’m afraid not – i’m not a guitarist or a ukulele player myself so i’m not too familiar with the online resources available for them. I’ll share your question over on the Facebook page to see if anyone in the community knows. Hope this helps!
I just love all of your posts and ideas! Thank you so much for linking up to Discover & Explore this week. Your site is such a wonderful resource!
