This colour song and guessing game teaches children their colours in a fun and engaging way. It is also brilliant for encouraging them to really listen to the clues as well as building musical confidence through call and response.
The Colour Song
My colour’s cool and pure,
Like sky or water ,
Guess what you think it is?
(child answers) “I think it’s blue!”
*
My colour’s clean and fresh,
Like a cucumber,
Guess what you think it is?
(child answers) “I think it’s green!”
*
My colour’s warm and hot,
Just like a chilli,
Guess what you think it is?
(child answers) “I think it’s red!”
*
My colour’s like the sun,
Or a banana!
Guess what you think it is?
(child answers) “I think it’s yellow”
*
My colour’s dark as ink,
Just like a spider!
Guess what you think it is?
(child answers) “I think it’s black”
(sing to the same tune as ‘My Paddle’s Keen and Bright’)
How to Play the Colour Song Guessing Game
Colour Song Sheet Music
This song is a great one for circle time, as it really engages the children and they are always so keen to show you how good they are at listening to the clues and naming the colours.
For children of 2-3 years: you can use a variety of different coloured props. This depends on what you have handy or whether you are exploring a particular theme, but show the correctly coloured item as you sing each verse, and they will soon get the idea.
For children of 3-4 years: try hiding small coloured toys or bricks in a bag. Choose one to hold in your hand – but don’t show it – ask them to guess the colour by listening to the clues.
For children of 4-6 years: pass the bag around the circle, each child takes a turn to pick an item and hide it. They then sing the clues and everyone else guesses the colour. Encourage them to experiment with different clues – there is plenty of scope for some imaginative improvisation!
You can develop this game further by making it into a treasure hunt. Hide the objects around the room and ask the children to search for each coloured item in turn. As you sing each verse (you might have to repeat it a few times while their hunting!) they will spot the different coloured items on their way, but they must not touch them until that colour is requested. This also serves as a memory game because they must try to remember where each different coloured item can be found.
