Every one knows and loves Little Red Riding Hood but the story is a rather dark tale, and one that you would not normally consider very child friendly. However this never seems to bother little children, even though I would try to gloss over the scary bits, my own kids would only be more fascinated and even amused by the wolf getting his comeuppence.
This fairy tale is a perfect addition to our songs for storytelling series in our DIY puppet theatre, so I wrote this Little Red Riding Hood Song to help tell the story without dwelling too much on the macabre side of the tale.
Little Red Riding Hood Storytelling Song
Oh little Red Riding Hood, Riding Hood, Riding Hood,
Oh little Red Riding Hood went into the woods.
*
Off to visit her poor Granny, her poor Granny, her poor Granny,
Off to visit her poor Granny who was sick.
*
She didn’t see the Big Bad Wolf, the Big Bad Wolf, the Big Bad Wolf,
She didn’t see the Big Bad Wolf watching her!
*
The wolf wanted to eat her up, to eat her up, to eat her up,
The wolf wanted to eat her up, Big bad Wolf!
*
The woodcutter he saved them, saved them, saved them,
The woodcutter he saved them, Thank Goodness!
*
That was the end of the Big bad Wolf, the Big bad Wolf, the Big bad Wolf,
That was the end of the Big bad Wolf, good riddance!!
(sung to the same tune as There Was A Princess Long Ago)
Start off by reading the story together if you don’t have the book, there is a nice one here. Then use our free printable puppets and song to encourage children to tell their own version of the story all over again and again..
Good day!
May I request if you used script for the Little Red Riding hoodt? It’s my son 4th birthday this Sunday (March 06) and my one of our surprises to him is the shadow puppet show.
I am so happy and made my life easy for the free downloadable design puppets available in your website. I printed it and started cutting now – I will be working this afternoon the stage and a few decorations.
Quick questions:
Do you have character of wolf wearing the Grandma’s sleeping caps and her glasses?
How did you show when Woodcutter bonked the wolf on the head and slit him down the middle with his axe and popped Granny. Do you have a separate puppet design for that?
Do you recommend any background music I could use to make it more real?
Thank you and looking forward to your favorable reply.
Regards
Brenda
Hi Brenda, I am so glad you have decided to do a puppet show for your son’s Birthday! And I am sure it will make it very special 🙂 Sorry there aren’t any more puppets available but you should be able to make duplicates and stick your own extra paper props on to them. As for the scary bits of the story, I always tell that bit without the puppets just with sound effects to add a little drama. Children have fantastic imaginations and sometimes it’s better to to let them use it!
Here’s the youtube link to the original recording of “Who’s afraid of the Big bad Wolf?” which would be perfect for your puppet show. https://youtu.be/XIOSOlqMaj8 Good luck 🙂
What an adorable resource! I love the song and the felt board printables!
Thanks so much for linking up to The Thoughtful Spot! I’m always glad to see you sharing your ideas here!
