Little Miss Muffet is a lovely little song which happily lends itself to a makeshift puppet show. All you need is a favourite dolly, a bowl and spoon and a little pretend spider on a string. You can make a spider easily either with an egg carton and pipe cleaners or something like the pin below which is an idea I’m rather taken with!
Everyone takes turns to help Miss Muffet eat up all of her curds and whey which I always explain as yoghurt. Then another person dangles the spider beside her which makes her drop her bowl in fright and run away to hide.

Little Miss Muffet
Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet
Eating her curds and whey,
Along came a spider, who sat down beside her,
And frightened Miss Muffet away!
*
Little Miss Muffet came back to her tuffet,
To finish her curds and whey,
And back came the spider, who sat down beside her
And gave her a lovely bouquet!
Some children can be quite worried by Little Miss Muffet’s distress. Reassure them by explaining that the spider didn’t mean to frighten her. He was only hungry and that all he wanted was some of her curds and whey. Which of course they are very happy to rectify!
I always think this is a useful way to encourage children who might be a bit frightened of spiders that they are not so bad after all.
