Creepy Crawly Bug Song

February 17, 2021 By Sara Mullett 2 Comments

Kids do love this Creepy Crawly Bug Song! It’s always a hit with little bug enthusiasts of course, but it’s also great for encouraging anyone who might not be so keen!

This can be sung as a straightforward finger rhyme and as it has a catchy, simple tune it’s easy to pick up and join in with. But my favourite way of singing this song is as a little guessing game.

How to play the Creepy Crawly Bug song

  • Gather a collection of small toy bugs, if you need to improvise, these can easily be homemade from scraps of fabric or wool and pipe cleaners.
  • Keep the bugs all together in a box with a lid and allow each child to take turns to put their hand inside and feel for one of the bugs. This of course is greatly anticipated and a big thrill ☺️
  • When they have chosen one, they bring it out of the box, but still carefully hidden in their hand.
  • As the child reveals the secret bug they can sing the first line of the verse on their own, and then everyone joins for the rest and with the actions.

Creepy Crawly Bug song

( wiggle finger along your forearm)

How Does a Caterpillar Go?
How does a caterpillar go?
Dear me, does anybody know?
How does a caterpillar go?
Wiggle, wiggle all day long.

(flutter fingers like busy bee wings)

How does a honeybee go?
Dear me, does anybody know?
How does a honeybee go?
Buzzing, buzzing all day long.

(creep finger down your leg)

How does the little snail go?
Dear me, does anybody know?
How Does the little snail go?
Sliding, slowly all day long.

(Link thumbs and flap fingers like wings)

How does a butterfly go?
Dear me, does anybody know?
How does a butterfly go?
Flutter, flutter all day long.

(walk thumb and index fingers ‘Incy Wincy style’)

How does a busy spider go?
Dear me, does anybody know?
How does a busy spider go?
Spinning her web all day long

    Hi Sara,

Your bug song and the pond activity are really cute and unique.
I’m wondering if you have guitar chords for the bug song?
    Thank you!
    Jackie

Hi Jackie, That’s great, I’m glad you like the resources! I’ve just updated the sheet music to include guitar chords. 😊
