One of the best things about Autumn is the beautiful coloured leaves, acorns, cones and conkers that you can find on your travels. There are so many lovely Autumn nature crafts and decorations to make with your children at this time of year.
But before you get started, have a go at playing this Autumn Treasure Guessing Song, which is a great way for kids to learn to name them all and practice colour recognition too!
Autumn Treasure Guessing Song
This leaf is warm and dark,
Just like the Earth’s soil,
Guess what you think it is?
“I think it’s brown”
*
This leaf is warm and hot,
Just like a chilli,
Guess what you think it is?
“I think it’s red”
*
This leaf shines like the sun,
Just like a grapefruit,
Guess what you think it is?
“I think it’s yellow”
*
This spiky little tree,
Comes from a great pine,
Guess what you think it is,
“It’s a pine cone!”
*
This is a little nut,
Wearing it’s own hat,
Guess what you think it is?
“It’s an acorn!”
*
This seed flies in the wind,
Like a heli-cop-ter,
Guess what you think it is?
“sycamore seed”
*
Squirrels’s like collecting these,
For the long winter,
Guess what you think it is?
It’s a chestnut!
(sing to the same tune as What’s My Colour Guessing Song)

Before singing this song you’ll need to gather some real Autumn treasures. Go for a forage for beautiful leaves, pine cones and acorns etc. and because you can never be sure what you’re going to find, you might need to adapt the words to include your particular treasures in the song.
How To Adapt The game To Suit Different Ages
- With younger children, you can sing the question part of the verse first and then encourage them to sing in the answer at the end. Keep the treasures hidden in a bag or box and sing the clues while each one is out of sight, only produce it at the end if the children guess what it is correctly.
- Older children can take turns to sing the clues too and test each other, they’ll enjoy choosing the treasures and making up the clues. The words above can be used as a guide to get started, but encourage a relaxed and creative approach to making up new verses.
- This activity is great for developing observation and description skills, and expanding the vocabulary.
