In the first of our Five Senses Songs we explore the sense of smell with ‘How Does A Red Rose Smell’? We’ve included 6 easy verses, but once kids get the idea, they’re only too happy to come up with their own suggestions – and they tend to like the ‘pongy’ ones the best of course!!

How Does A Red Rose Smell is great for expanding the vocabulary as littles ones really have to think about describing the different smells and thinking up their own verses.
You can expand this activity by turning it into an actual sniffing game,
- Take 4 small pots or containers which you can’t see through.
- Fill them with 4 different things that you feel a child would recognise – e.g. shampoo or shower gel, toothpaste, peanut butter, cheese
- Choose one pot at a time, and allow each child to take turns to sniff the contents with their eyes shut.
- Once they’ve guessed correctly, you can discuss how to describe the different smells together.
- Then alter the words of the song to suit your own choices.
