Ride A Cock Horse To Banbury Cross

September 7, 2021 By Sara Mullett 4 Comments

Ride A Cock Horse is a traditional English nursery rhyme just perfect for knee bobbing with babies and toddlers. It’s a great favourite to sing whenever children are playing on rocking toys or playing with a hobby-horse. The gentle rhythmic rocking of the song is an excellent way for children to feel the beat in the music expressed in simple movement.

Ride a Cock Horse to Banbury Cross

To see a fine lady upon a fine horse,

With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes,

She shall have music where ever she goes!

  • With older children, you can play a circle game with a hobby-horse.
  • The first child trots around the circle on the hobby-horse while everyone sings the song.
  • At the end of the verse, they pass the hobby-horse on to the next person who follows suit until everyone has had their turn.
  • A simple game, but they are always very keen to have a go!
  • If you don’t have a hobby horse handy, kids are just as happy pretending to be a little pony themselves!
