How Kids Benefit
The Carnival of the Animals is excellent for teaching all sorts of musical concepts. These colourful and hugely contrasting short movements are perfect for introducing tempo and dynamics and illustrating the use of simple musical form. As musical awareness grows, children will learn to identify the various instruments and begin to understand the musical imagery that Saint-Saëns uses to illustrate each animal. They’ll start to hear and recognise the themes that he borrowed from his composer friends and can then also enjoy the irony and the humour of this hugely popular playful piece of music.
- Brings classical music alive for children aged 4-10 years
- Bursting with fun, colour and comedy
- Encourages children to listen and connect with the music
- Promotes imaginative movement and role play
- A wealth of creative inspiration for improvisation and experimenting with composing
- Great way to introduce new musical concepts
What ages will benefit from these teaching resources?
Younger children tend to naturally respond through imaginative movement and role play. Listening first, and then identifying and mimicking the animals. While older children can find it a wealth of creative inspiration. Having a go at improvising and composing their own animal inspired pieces.

I have purchased many of Sara’s Lesson Plans. I teach music to students from preschool (3 & 4 yr old) to 8th grade at a local grade school. The Carnival of the Animals Teaching Bundle will be a great help in teaching the middle grades. I have had difficulty with this age group as many plans are either too young or too old to keep their interest. The Introduction itself has many points that I can use with the older students from the biographical notes on Saint-Saens to the instruments used. Of course there is much material there for the younger students also. Thank you, Sara for all the effort put in to this lesson bundle.
